Ellis Monk is Professor of Sociology at Harvard University and Inventor of the Monk Skin Tone Scale
His research interests include: race/ethnicity in comparative perspective, colorism, health, race/ethnicity & technology (e.g., artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision), sociology of the body, social psychology, and theory.

Professor Monk is a recipient of the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (2022-2027), which supports his research on skin tone and pulse oximetry. He is a Voting Member and Contributor of ISO/TC 121/SC 3/JWG 10 (Medical Electrical Equipment / Pulse Oximeters) and co-author of ISO 80601-2-61 Ed. 3 Annex DD. He is also seated on ISO TC 42 (Photography) and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 37 (Biometrics).
